The Fulton Challenge: Exceeded and Extended

The Fulton Challenge

make a gift

Math and artists go hand in hand. At least they do at the Herberger College of Fine Arts, where alumni, students, staff and faculty exceeded the fund-raising numbers proposed by
ASU alumnus Ira Fulton.

Initiated in March 2005, the Fulton Challenge encouraged Herberger College constituents to raise $50,000 in support of a Dean’s Investment Fund to meet the urgent and emerging needs of the Herberger College. For every gift made to the college, Fulton agreed to match it dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 per individual gift.

At the close of the challenge on Dec. 31, 2005, supporters exceeded the goal, raising $84,225. Fulton, too, exceeded his commitment, matching the full amount raised by contributors, bringing the total funds raised to $168,450.

Fulton’s generosity was once again exhibited on Feb. 1, 2006, when he extended an additional $25,000 challenge to the Herberger College, promising the same dollar-for-dollar match for funds raised by June 30, 2006.

“The overwhelming response of alumni illustrates the major strides we have made toward creating a new culture of philanthropy for our college,” said Dean Robert Wills. “Ira Fulton’s generosity and matching gifts will profoundly impact every academic program in our college: art, dance, music, theatre, film and the museum. With Mr. Fulton’s extended generosity in the second challenge, we can support additional student scholarships, faculty research, community outreach and curatorial research that will touch the lives of our students and the community at large.”
