Several alumni were excited to be nominated for four GRAMMY Awards and to win the 2008 GRAMMY Award for Best Engineered Album, Classical, as part of the Phoenix Bach Choir. Among the ASU Herberger College alumni are Dana Bender (MM, choral music, ’95), Cora Blouch (BM, performance, ’05), Sean Carter Campbell (BM, performance, ’06), Ryan Garrison (MM, music education, ’06), Joshua Hillmann (future alumnus), Laura Inman (MM, music education, ’03), Amy Perciballi (MM, performance, ’95), Carol Proudfoot (MM, performance, ’99), Joel Rinsema (MM, performance, ’96), Kira Rugen (MM, music education, ’02), Riki Sloan (BM, music education, ’05) and David Topping (MM, choral music, ’92). Carolyn Broe (Waters) (DMA, solo performance, ’01) is conductor for the Four Seasons Orchestra of Scottsdale. She also teaches violin and viola at Paradise Valley Community College and is helping start a music conservatory for young string players in Nigeria, Africa.
Check out the special-effect painting of Craig Cheply (BFA, interior design, ’80) in The Kingdom starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, which was released on DVD in January 2008. (more) Cynthia Coons (MFA, ’00) has launched a new arm of her business that specializes in helping to market artists, especially those who need assistance organizing their support materials. Greg Esser, (MFA, ’01) interviewed Natalie Goldberg, author of Old Friend from Far Away and Writing Down the Bones, for the February 2008 issue of Book Stories, the newsletter of Changing Hands Book Store. Richard Good (DMA, solo performance, ’96) co-directed the 2007 Macy’s Great American Marching Band in the Macy’s Day Parade, his second year in a row. Good is director of bands at Auburn University. Deborah Vaughn (MFA, theatre for youth, ’05) recently accepted a position as the arts education coordinator at the Oregon Arts Commission in Salem. She advocates arts learning throughout the state.
Melanie Yazzie (BA, studio art, ’90), associate professor of art at the University of Colorado-Boulder, returns to ASU for a presentation and exhibition, Walking, Skipping & Creating: Art by a Contemporary Navajo/Dine Woman. The exhibition features 15 works in painting, printing and sculpture, and a public presentation, Thurs., March 27, 3-5 p.m., Social Sciences, room 109. Here’s what’s up with some of your favorite faculty members: Betsy Fahlman, art history professor and ASU Herberger College School of Art associate director, has been awarded a summer 2008 fellowship to conduct research at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. During her five-week residency at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Fahlman begins a project on the history of the Kraushaar Galleries and its papers housed at the Archives of American Art. (more) Michael Kocour, the director of Jazz studies in the ASU Herberger College School of Music, was featured in November 2007 on National Public Radio’s award winning, internationally syndicated program, "Piano Jazz." The program is a forum for jazz legends and influential performers as well as up-and-coming talents. (more) Karen Schupp, senior lecturer in ASU Herberger College Dance, was one of 22 choreographers selected to participate in the second Wave Rising series in Brooklyn, New York, in fall 2008. Wave Rising showcases some of the world's best and brightest up-and-coming dance makers. Schupp be performed and presented three works: Response, Will Memories Be Made of This and Not Yet. F. Miguel Valenti,Lincoln Professor of Ethics and the Arts and assistant director of the ASU Herberger College School of Theatre and Film, was featured in the Dec. 7, 2007 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education for his work in creating the nation’s first program to incorporate ethical decision making into film production curricula.
