The Herberger College of Fine Arts embraced ASU President Michael Crow’s social embeddedness design imperative with the creation of Herberger College for Kids and Herberger College at Large for adults and older teens. The programs offer the community an array of fine arts classes taught by award-winning ASU professors and students.

Community

Summer 2005 launched the Herberger College for Kids summer program and the new Herberger College at Large for older teens and adults. The schools continue to expand their offerings based on community interest.

“In all my years in the world of community arts schools, I’ve never had the opportunity to lead a school with such promise,” said Director Cathy Fletcher, who relocated to Arizona to develop the community schools for the Herberger College. “As we grow and evolve, we hope to be the place for individuals of all ages to become immersed in the arts, hone their skills and find their passion in life.”

Fletcher feels the program’s low student-to-teacher ratios, quality supplies and spaces, and experienced instructors, most of whom are at the master’s and doctoral level, set this program apart from other Valley arts programs.

The Herberger College of Fine Arts has offered the Eleanor Robb Children’s Art Workshop for several years. The popularity of those classes and the growth of the Valley prompted the college to integrate these offerings into a community school setting.

“The need for more arts experiences has grown with Phoenix’s distinction as the fifth largest city in the United States,” said Dean J. Robert Wills. “It’s important that Herberger College shares its resources and award-winning talent with the community so we can help build the capacity for art and culture in the Valley.”
