statement

The Herberger College of Fine Arts joined in a creative approach to help students in underperforming elementary schools meet state standards in reading, writing, math and the arts. The Phoenix Arts Collaborative works through existing after-school programs to link art with science, math and language arts.

Continued commitment

The Herberger College of Fine Arts continues to be loyal to the four dimensions of community commitment developed after its naming:

  • We aspire to be accomplished, vibrant and innovative
  • We are committed to collaborative discovery
  • We are part of a connected community
  • We offer stakeholders a transforming experience

Through one of the college’s signature community partnerships, Maestra!Maestro!, fine arts students intern with teaching artists and collaborate with classroom teachers. “The collaborative programs are alternative pathways to teaching the state standards,” said Melanie Ohm, director of Community Partnerships for the Herberger College of Fine Arts.

The collaborative works to improve students’ reading, math and language scores compared to the previous year and to provide high-quality education that meets the Arizona Standards for Arts Education.
A $3 million 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the Arizona Department of Education funds the program over five years.
