The Herberger College School of Music welcomed, as part of the Katherine K. Herberger Visiting Artists program, its first visiting quartet in residence in the fall 2005. The St. Lawrence String Quartet has been lauded as “provocative and brilliant” and “one of the great quartets of our lifetime” by The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.

As visiting quartet in residence, the Grammy-nominated ensemble presented concerts, master classes and open rehearsals, in addition to working with students on themed projects. Students gained information, insight and tools of the trade, while at the same time, they were inspired and encouraged by the experience.

“Their enthusiasm for music and for reaching out to their audiences make them natural teachers, and they perform with the highest level of artistry and precision,” said Jonathan Swartz, artistic director of the visiting quartet residency at the School of Music. “The idea is to have a different major professional string quartet in residence each year to give our students the opportunity to work and develop a relationship with four different major professional string quartets over the course of an undergraduate degree at ASU.”

Unlike other institutions, the idea is different from having a permanent quartet in residence or having groups visit only once. “This residency is designed with the intent of planning the future quartet residencies five years in advance, so we can customize projects and curricula accordingly,” Swartz said.
