As we welcome a new cohort of students from around the world to Arizona State University and the Herberger College of the Arts, our message to the community is that success in the arts is achieved through connecting to the larger world. Discovering new connections is essential to the creative process. The arts are important to any community and should not be practiced in isolation – unseen and unheard.
In the future, artists must choose from among an unprecedented array of tools to express their creative vision. We need to examine both what we are teaching and why we are teaching it, as well as the effectiveness of our teaching methods. We need to guarantee that our students are fluent in the full range of techniques that are available to them as life-long members of the creative community.
The New American University cannot thrive without the arts. And the arts cannot thrive without new models of education that interact dynamically with the realities of the world around us.
We look forward to carrying the ASU initiatives of access, excellence and impact into the coming year. With your leadership and support, whether you give your time or treasure, we invite each of you to continue partnering with us. Together we can strengthen our students and the community.

Meet Juliana Brown, vice president, Information Systems, ASU Foundation
A day in the life of the vice president of information systems finds Michigan native Juliana Brown developing systems that allow Arizona State University do a better job of reaching out to all our constituencies.
“One of the large creative challenges facing the university, as ASU’s enrollment has grown, is the increased numbers of student graduating each year,” Brown says. “We have a dynamic young alumni population who are a challenge to reach. Although we have a loyal core of investors, we are investing a great deal of creativity into figuring out ways to engage these young potential investors and increase the number of alumni who are making gifts.” Read More
