Dance for Non-Majors

The list of courses below gives you a general idea of non-major courses offered. To find specific course listings for a particular semester, visit ASU's schedule of classes. Other courses may be offered to non-majors with faculty permission. Contact Cynthia Roses-Thema for more information.

DAN 130 Ballet I
Offers student an introduction to ballet technique with attention to alignment and rotational issues.  

DAN 130 Ballet II
Provides non-major dancers with intermediate level class to expand their technical abilities in this dance genre.

DAN 130 Modern I
Introduces non-major dancers to modern dance technique. Alignment, core muscular strength, and spatial exploration are the focus of this class.

DAN 130 Modern II
Continues development of level I technical issues to highlight the art, craft, and science of movement in modern dance.

DAN 130 Jazz I
Provides non-major dancers with beginning level technique class in different jazz styles. Focus of class is on alignment, technique, and  performance skills.

DAN 130 Jazz II
Explores for the non-major dancer various jazz dance techniques at the intermediate level. 

DAN 194 Latin/Salsa I
Introduces the student to Latin dancing. Instruction focuses on salsa, cha-cha, merengue & rumba.

DAN 194 Hip Hop
Equips student with understanding of hip hop dance history, culture and music through studio work on various hip-hop dance styles.

DAN 194 Argentine Tango I
Gives student the basic fundamentals of Argentine tango to include lead/follow, improvisation, styles, vocabulary, and musicality.

DAN 194 Oriental/Belly Dance I
Utilizes combinations and choreography at a beginning level to hone body alignment and coordination in Oriental/Belly Dance technique.  

DAN 194 Dances of West Africa
Focuses on traditional and urban African singing, drumming, dancing. Interprets drama /demonstrations, sculptures and values.

DAN 194 Feldenkrais I
Expands student awareness through movement sequences that bring attention to the body parts that are uninvolved in functional action. The Feldenkrais® Method is an approach that works to enhance awareness and improve function of movement.

DAN 194 Latin/Swing/Ballroom I
Guides student into a beginning level of cha cha, salsa, rumba, swing, foxtrot, tango and waltz. Student gains understanding of historical and cultural aspects.

DAN 194 Country Western
Initiates the student into the rhythm two step, progressive two-step, night club two-step, country cha cha, country waltz, triple swing and a multitude of line dances.

DAN 194 Capoeira
Provides student with introduction to the Afro-Brazilian martial art and movement form capoeira. Elements of self-defense, dance, music, song, language, culture and philosophy are melded into course.

DAN 194 Pilates/Yoga
Supplies the student with an understanding of the basics in Pilates mat exercises and Yoga poses/postures. 

DAN 194 Tai Chi Chuan I
Familiarizes the student with the Ancient Chinese marital art of rounded, fluid, balanced movements.

DAH 101 Intro to Dance
Facilitates for the student an understanding of dance as a performing art. This course explores history, philosophy, technique, and terminology of ballet, modern dance, jazz and other forms influenced by Western civilization.

DAH 201 Dance in World Cultures
Provides an introduction to the study of dance cultures in diverse global contexts. No background in dance is necessary to successfully complete the course. Students will experience specific dance styles in master classes with guest artists.

DAH 294 Dance on Video
Investigates dance as a tool that shapes the content and form of video presentations the range from commercial television shows to Hollywood movies.

DAH 301 Philosophy/Criticism of Dance
Develops student's ability to undertake critical inquiry into dance as an academic subject.

DAH 401 Dance History
Emphasizes  contemporary history of dance to include vernacular dance forms. Students will learn various ways of conducting research into dance history.
