Music history stories inspire future performances for Korbi Adams
It’s exciting for me to be in the ASU Herberger College School of Music, since I have the opportunity to be around music everyday. I feel like I am getting a small-school education while still having the positive aspects and resources of a major public university. Most of the classes that I’ve taken contain about 20 people. Whether it’s incorporating new music into the curriculum, offering “off the beaten path” music history classes or exploring new performance avenues, the music education students receive from the Herberger College doesn’t leave them in the past.
I was fortunate to choose such a forward-thinking school, while also receiving a music scholarship and the opportunity to study with the famous clarinet professor, Robert Spring. The things that he’s done for me and taught me are irreplaceable, as he is my professor and friend. Dr. Kay Norton also has enlightened my ASU experience - her classes have made me completely invigorated by music history. She has helped me activate a new level of critical thinking. She taught me that music history is more than just facts and dates; it is the gateway to truly understanding the music we hear and play everyday.
I believe the things I’ve learned during my ASU experience have prepared me for post-graduation work in community outreach or working in the education department of an orchestra or opera company. I want to develop innovative programs and concerts that work within the communities - bringing classical music to people who are not usually in the audience of a Friday night symphony concert. Inviting others into the realm of music and revealing the stories that it contains is what inspires me the most. When I can spark an interest in music for someone else and help them see even a portion of the fun and excitement in music that I see, I feel fulfilled.
